Common questions
- Does it work offline?
- Yes — that is the point. Trips, fuel, hours, maintenance, documents, reports, reminders and the anchor watch all work with no signal at all, because none of them ever leave the phone. Recording a trip needs GPS, which comes off satellites and is not a network. Four things do want a connection, and none of them is the logbook: sending a float plan to somebody, since delivering a message needs a network; checking your subscription, which the App Store and RevenueCat handle between them — an existing subscriber still gets in at sea, because that check falls back to what the device already knows; fetching a tide table, which is cached a month at a time so it reads offline afterwards; and searching for a dock by name, though you can still drop the pin by hand. The privacy policy lists every one of them and what it sends.
- Where is my logbook stored?
- On your iPhone or iPad. Optionally, if you switch on iCloud sync in Settings, in your own iCloud account as well. It is never sent anywhere else.
- Does it run on iPad?
- Yes. The same app, on a readable column rather than the phone layout stretched across the screen, and it works alongside another app in Split View. One subscription covers both — it is a single purchase on your Apple Account, not one per device.
- What language is it in?
- Twenty-three, and it follows whatever iOS is set to: English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Polish, Turkish, Arabic, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Malay. The trade vocabulary was translated as trade vocabulary rather than by dictionary — a sterndrive is a Z-Antrieb and an embase Z, not an “inboard”. If a term reads wrong to you in your own language, write in: that is exactly the correction worth having.
- Is iCloud sync on by default?
- No. Settings → iCloud sync. Turning it on or off never moves your records — the same file stays where it is either way. The sync row reports what is actually happening rather than what the switch says, and a change takes effect on the next launch because the database is opened once when the app starts.
- Why does Logline ask for location?
- Two things use it: recording where a trip went and how far, and watching the circle when an anchor watch is set. It uses “While Using the App” access, and a passage keeps recording with the screen off. Decline it and everything still works — trips are logged by hand. Automatic trip detection needs a home dock set, in setup or on the Boat screen.
- How do I get my logbook out?
- Settings → Back it up first produces a single file with your whole log in it. The Reports screen exports CSV for a spreadsheet and a PDF ship’s log for a broker, surveyor or insurer. If your subscription has lapsed, the backup is still reachable from the subscription screen — your records are yours.
- Why does maintenance say something is due when the hours are not up?
- Every interval runs on engine hours and calendar time at once and falls due on whichever arrives first. A boat that sat on the mooring all season still needs its oil changed.
- I replaced my hour meter and the readings dropped.
- Record the new reading and confirm the meter was changed. Logline shifts every hour-based interval by the difference, so the hours remaining on each task stay what they were. It does not quietly extend an interval.
- Can I rely on the anchor watch overnight?
- Treat it as a second pair of eyes, not as a watchkeeper. It cannot wake you if iOS has shut the app down — Logline asks only for “While Using the App” location, which is enough to keep watching in the background but not enough to restart on its own if the system reclaims the memory in the small hours. The app says so at the top of the anchor watch screen, and it is not softened there either. Leave the phone on charge, and keep whatever you would otherwise have kept. What it does do well: it wants several fixes outside the circle before it wakes you, so one wild reading below decks is not an alarm, and once it has gone off, swinging back inside does not silence it — a boat that dragged is a boat that dragged.
- Why is the tide table empty?
- Tide predictions come from NOAA, which covers United States waters only, and the screen says so rather than showing you an empty table that reads like a day with no tide. Where there is coverage, a month is fetched at once and kept on the device, so it still reads with no signal after the first look.
- How do I cancel?
- In iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions, or the App Store app. Cancellation is Apple’s, not ours, and takes effect at the end of the period you have paid for.
- Does Logline show charts?
- No, and it never will. It is a logbook, not a chartplotter — it keeps the record and stays out of the way of whatever you navigate with. A finished trip can be drawn over a map ashore, which answers “where did we go?”; it shows no depths, no buoys and no lights, so it cannot answer “can I go there?”. Nothing at sea depends on it: while a passage is recording, the track is drawn on ruled paper and needs no tiles at all.
Reporting a problem
Include what happened, what you expected, your iPhone or iPad model and iOS version, and whether iCloud sync is on. If the app showed a message, quote it — and if it was in a language other than English, quote it in that language.
